Bonfire Night 2009
Thursday 5th November
Windermere Rugby Football Club once again staged their annual bonfire night bonanza on Thursday 5th.
Despite heavy rain during the run up to, and on Thursday, the scene was set for a memorable evening.
The inclement did nothing to dampen the spirits of the rugby club member who were marshalling, cooking
food or any of the many hundreds of spectators who thronged to Dawes Meadow for a truly magnificent show.
The plan was to light the bonfire at 6.30 p.m. and the week’s rain had no effect on a spectacular bonfire
that burned ‘a treat’ (though personally I think a few gallons of diesel might have been needed to get it going).
There were so many people still arriving at 7 p.m. that the first firework was not set off until 7.10 p.m.
but from then on with the moon rising over the fells we were treated to a magnificent display that
lasted a full 20 minutes.
With rockets arching over the field and mortars firing into the air it was gratifying to see the Rugby Club
had not entered into the current ‘fad’ of low noise fireworks (in the authors opinion half the fun of a
firework display comes from the whistles and bangs).
Personally I can’t wait for next year’s Bonfire Night to come.
